SANDWICH SNACKS

As part of Design Technology work, children in Year Three and Four made sandwiches. chair design 015.jpgchair design 019.jpg

We had a visit from staff from Marks and Spencer. They brought samples of bread and sandwiches to try to give us some ideas for what to put in our sandwiches.

Next, we had a ‘Taste Test’ of our own. We sampled different spreads until we could make a choice of which we preferred. We also sampled different types of bread to help us to choose which we would like to use in our sandwich.

Food hygiene was the focus for our next session. We learned how to prepare a basic sandwich, following good hygiene rules (of course we had to sample what we had made too!)

Our focused task was then to use the knowledge we had gained so far and design and make a sandwich that would ‘fill’ the BFG from the Roald Dahl story. We thought about our design criteria (had to be healthy, had to be ‘filling,’ etc) and worked in groups to produce a design.

We then followed the design to make our sandwich. They were quadruple deckers! We had to hold them with both hands when we were eating them! Yummy!

TAKE A SEAT!

As part of Art lessons, Classes 6, 7 and 8 designed and made a chair for a story book character.
Abbey Jo.jpg

To research this area, we looked at different types of seat and considered their uses, how they were made and the types of materials they were made from.

Next, we made a basic frame from wood and secured it with card corners. Once we had done this, we were ready to design our chairs. We thought carefully about the design and use of colour as the chair had to match the personality of the character that we had designed it for.

We made chairs for Action Man, the Little Mermaid, Felicity Wishes, the Three Little Pigs, Horrid Henry – to name but a few!

Perfect Pencil Cases

christmas 2006 034.jpg

In Design Technology lessons, Classes 6, 7 and 8 designed and made pencil cases.

First of all we looked and critically evaluated the suitability of some shop-bought pencil cases. We then had an understanding of what we needed to do to make a good pencil case.

Before we could get started designing and making our own, we had to sharpen up our sewing skills. We practised our running stitches until they got smaller and smaller.

Next, we designed our pencil case around a basic pattern. We thought carefully about out choice of colour and thread. The logo we designed was something that we were interested in, for example: a kitten, a football or a flower.

Having designed the pencil case we started sewing it. We had lots of parent volunteers in school to help us. The stitching was so neat that you couldn’t tell if it had been done by hand or a sewing machine!

All that was left to do was to add the logo – the pencil cases were then ready to use. The pencil cases have been so well made that we are still using them now!

Don't Be Alarmed!

chair design 039.jpg

In Design Technology work, Year Three/Four pupils completed a unit of work on ‘Alarms.’

Firstly we looked at all of the different types of alarms we come across and their purpose.

Having gathered this information, we revised work on how to make a basic circuit including a light or a buzzer. A development of these circuits was the inclusion of a switch.

Once we had worked out how to make the mechanics of the alarm, we designed the alarm itself and decided what it was hoping to protect. Some were to protect jewellery, with the alarm sounding when the jewellery was removed from its place. One alarm alerted the owner to their briefcase being picked up. Others relied on the idea of a pressure pad to set off a burglar alarm when stood on.

Our visit to Metro Radio

smallmetro radio 008.jpg

Back in the Spring Term, Class 7 were rewarded for having the highest whole class attendance by having a studio tour of Metro Radio. This included entertainment by Martin the Magician, who performed a number of tricks, one in particular included using a live rabbit! The highlight was meeting DJ Wayne who explained how the machinery in his studio worked and the children actually recorded a windy jingle which was played that evening live on the radio. The children danced the rest of the night away to the tunes of DJ Kenny and took part in the best dancer competition. They all received a gift and a buffet was put on. The children had an unforgettable evening. The staff at Metro commented on their exceptional behaviour and manners. Well Done Class 7!

Christmas Activities in Lower Key Stage Two

Although it seems ages ago now, we can still remember the great fun we had at Christmas in Year Three/Four. We had a party – lots of dancing and great food! We did lots of craft activities and even managed to fit in a spot of baking too!

Every year, the children in Key Stage Two go to St. Alban’s church for the carol service. It’s a lovely event and gets you in the mood for Christmas. Children and parents sing a mixture of traditional carols and modern Christmas songs. The orchestra play some seasonal pieces and selected children from throughout the Key Stage read extracts of the Christmas story. The readings and singing are accompanied by children carrying figures form the nativity story through the church where they make a candle lit display.

Having been to church on a cold December morning, we thought we would have a treat waiting for us when we got back…mince pies and hot orange juice! We made the pies ourselves (and gorgeous they were too!) Some of us had never tried mince pies before and really enjoyed them.

Christmas is such a lovely time to do craft activities. We made Christmas bags to put in everything we made. Christmas cards were reindeer with wobbly eyes. Best of all, we made hats to wear when eating our Christmas lunch – look at the attached photographs to see how festive we looked…

Healthy Choices Week

In the Autumn term, a whole school event took place to promote ‘Healthy Choices.’ The activities during this week focused on how to eat healthily, dental hygiene and the value of exercise.

In Lower Key Stage Two (Years Three and Four), we had a jam packed week! Events we took part in were:
A visit by the school dentist to talk about dental health
A visit to by the school nurse to talk about a healthy diet
Fruit tasting – mmm!
A competition to design a poster to promote fruit shop (the prize was free fruit for a week!)
A visit to Thomas Hepburn to take part in PE activities
“Ready Steady Cook where parents/carers came in and helped us to prepare food ‘against the clock’.

The week was a huge success and the children learned a great deal. Many parents were delighted with how many new things their children had tried this week.

Look out for some of the work we did in the main corridor in Key Stage Two.
