World Maths Day

On Wednesday 6th March we celebrated World Maths Day in school. Key Stage One and Two children were able to log on to the World Games website and had lots of fun competing against children from around the World. We had tangrams, cookery and puzzles throughout the day.

A fun time was definitely had by all. You could say…mathstastic!

Beeches, Oaks and Elms

Good morning Beeches, Oaks and Elms

We hope you are all well and managing to stay warm in this very cold, extreme weather!

We know you will be bored and missing life in year Five and Six sooooo much – fear no more as we’ve set you some tasks to do.

Literacy

Read or watch the news (you could access newsround). Make notes.
Your task is then to produce a newspaper report about the weather we are experiencing. You might like to interview someone at home and use inverted commas (speech marks) to include their views.

You will be attaching this into your literacy book once we return to school, so remember to think about your presentation. You can either present this handwritten or word processed – the choice is yours! Why not check the PowerPoint attached it’s about journalistic writing, just in case you can’t remember the features you need to include.

newspapers

Happy reporting!

Numeracy

You’ll like this…in preparation for objectives we will cover in the future, we would like you to:

• Calculate the area AND perimeter of your yard/garden/pathway/drive etc. Think how you can calculate this, you might like to use metres, hand spans, foot spans, length of spade etc – the decision is yours; remember to include the units!

• We are sure you have had plenty of fun playing in the snow. We would like you to use this experience to write 5 word problems related to time and snow. An example could be…

I start playing in the snow at 10:05am, I return to the house for lunch at 12:30pm and stay indoors for 30 minutes. After lunch I go back outside and play for a further 3 hours. How long do I spend in the snow?

Science

And finally…

Keep a food diary of everything you eat today try to categorise the food into different food groups e.g.

Food                            Food Group
Brown bread        Carbohydrate
Butter                   Fats
Tuna                    Protein
Salad                   Fruit and vegetable.

Enjoy!

We look forward to catching up with you all when school re-opens.

Take care, stay safe and warm

Mrs Hocking, Mrs Wong and Mr Hawdon

Movie Night

Many thanks to those who supported Movie Night. There were 132 children who came along to watch ‘Polar Express.’

Donations raised £142 which will be going to ‘Aquila Way’, a local charity helping those in need (adults, if you want to learn more about this charity, click on the link below)

My thanks also go to the members of school staff who gave up their time to help supervise the children. School councillors also helped with the organisation of the night. Merry Christmas to all (and to all a good night!)

Calling all bookworms!! Do you love reading and listening to stories? Then you will love an opportunity to be invited to our reading club in KS2. One lunchtime a week Mrs Smith will be inviting a class to join her in the library to listen to stories.  Children are invited to bring in books of their own and the class will then vote on which one we will read. Mrs Smith will also choose a book to read and discuss.

‘Beat Bullying Blues’

This week we have been celebrating anti-bullying week, where a variety of activities and tasks have been on the go! From assemblies, sharing Key Stage One and Two yards, designing friendship frames, anti-bullying posters and slogans.

As part of the week we ran a competition in Key Stage One and Two which was to design an anti-bullying poster and promote the role of our ‘Listening Buddies’ in school.

Well done to all of the winners – a tremendous effort!

Maths Games

I know how much you all love using the laptops and ICT suite whilst in school and developing your learning through games. Well, to help continue your learning at home, why not have a look at some of these maths games I have come across – simply click on the link below!

You could even show off your skills to an adult at home!
I can’t wait to read your comments.

Happy maths games!

The Elms Blog by Rianne and Josh (9/11/12)

The Elms have been doing a range of excellent things this week.

In Maths we have been learning about area and perimeter. Perimeter is the distance around the outside. You find the area by multiplying length by the width. We went into the hall and measured some ‘crash mats’, to find the area and perimeter we used a tape measure.

In literacy we’ve watched a short film, The Piano. We’ve done a lot of work on this already, including writing about what the characters are thinking.

For our Media topic we went on the laptops, to do our magazines .It is fun! When we have finish them we are going to sell them to UKS2.

In PE this week we have Played a good few games of bench ball, every one enjoys it.

In Science we are putting a quiz together on the things we’ve learned about the Earth, Sun and Moon. We’ve done a rough copy first, and then we are going to type it up on the computer.

Every Friday we have to go to Mrs. Hockings class because the Year 6 children go swimming. So we did some more maths, we learned a new method for dividing. Then we did a bit more literacy, there was a boring sentence on the smart board so we had to make it more exiting.

The Piano

Name that character!
In the Elms we are working on a Film Narrative unit. This short film by Aidan Gibbons has really captured our imagination (all hail Sponge Bob).

We aim to bring the characters in the film to life…and beginning with their names.

Your mission by Monday is to think of suitable names for the characters. Post them on here via the comments box if youy want. We will decide in class on Monday which names we will use.

Extra! Extra! Oaks Sell Magazines!

On Friday, the children in Oaks will be selling the magazines they have made to the children in Key Stage Two. They have ‘pitched’ them in assembly today.

Watch the adverts they have made to see which one you would like to buy…

The Elms Blog by Rianne and Josh (26/10/12)

In the Elms this week we have done a range of things.

In Maths we did assessments and problem solving.

Literacy, we had to make a wanted poster and contrasting settings. When we did character description Mr. Hawdon put on some silly glasses and pretended to be that person, he was mean and old.

When Mrs. Liddle came into the Elms we glazed our Diva lamps and we did maths we had to solve word problems.

In PE we played bench ball it was fun!

We’ve had parents evenings this week as well.

Unfortunately football was cancelled this week due to the weather.

…and here we are excited for half term.

Bike It Breakfast

During this half term some of our Year Five children have been completing their cycling safe awareness course. To celebrate their fantastic achievements Emma Spence from FEAT First organised a celebration breakfast. Cycling safe and well fed – that can’t be bad!
