What is a canopic jar?

What is a canopic jar?
The Ancient Egyptians used canopic jars to store their organs in after death in preparation for the afterlife. Children in Classes 6, 7 and 8 looked at photographs of canopic jars before making one of their own.

Want to make a canopic jar?
You will need an old soft drink bottle, some barley (or dried peas), modelling clay (air drying) and paint to decorate.

1. Fill the bottle with the barley – this will provide weight and stop the bottle from tipping over once you have added the head.
2. Press a fist sized lump of clay onto the bottle and press down to make a seal and attach it to the top of the bottle. Pinch and pull the clay until you have made the shape you want.
3. Leave the clay to harden.
4. Cover the bottle with plain paper (the paint won’t stick to the plastic bottle. Masking tape would also work.)
5. Decorate your bottle. We put hieroglyphs on ours.

Perfect Pencil Cases

christmas 2006 034.jpg

In Design Technology lessons, Classes 6, 7 and 8 designed and made pencil cases.

First of all we looked and critically evaluated the suitability of some shop-bought pencil cases. We then had an understanding of what we needed to do to make a good pencil case.

Before we could get started designing and making our own, we had to sharpen up our sewing skills. We practised our running stitches until they got smaller and smaller.

Next, we designed our pencil case around a basic pattern. We thought carefully about out choice of colour and thread. The logo we designed was something that we were interested in, for example: a kitten, a football or a flower.

Having designed the pencil case we started sewing it. We had lots of parent volunteers in school to help us. The stitching was so neat that you couldn’t tell if it had been done by hand or a sewing machine!

All that was left to do was to add the logo – the pencil cases were then ready to use. The pencil cases have been so well made that we are still using them now!

Don't Be Alarmed!

chair design 039.jpg

In Design Technology work, Year Three/Four pupils completed a unit of work on ‘Alarms.’

Firstly we looked at all of the different types of alarms we come across and their purpose.

Having gathered this information, we revised work on how to make a basic circuit including a light or a buzzer. A development of these circuits was the inclusion of a switch.

Once we had worked out how to make the mechanics of the alarm, we designed the alarm itself and decided what it was hoping to protect. Some were to protect jewellery, with the alarm sounding when the jewellery was removed from its place. One alarm alerted the owner to their briefcase being picked up. Others relied on the idea of a pressure pad to set off a burglar alarm when stood on.

Reception children have fun using our laptops regularly as part of their learning. Using a laptop brings a smile to everyone's face. It's good to get an early start with computers!
