Dome Opening! MP comes to school!

On 11th May Windy Nook invited Sharon Hodgson MP, and the creator of the Windy Nook Nature Park, Bill Elliott, to a special event.

Sharon came to officially open the willow dome and announce the winner of the Nature Park logo.

Later that morning Caroline interviewed Sharon Hodgson.

Q. Do you think it is a good idea to build the willow dome, and if yes, why?
A. Yes it will be lovely to have a space to go, children will like it more as they built it.

Q. Have you been to any other schools to open anything similar?
A. No nothing similar, but I went to Fell Dyke to open a new children's centre.

Q. What were your feelings when you were asked to open the willow dome?
A. I was honoured and proud because it is part of my community.

Q. Have you enjoyed opening the willow dome?
A. Yes thank you.

Day of Dance

The children in Foundation Stage took part in a Day of Dance.

The Bare Toed Dance Company led our children in a day of dance. Toes wiggled and bodies jiggled as we all had fun together.

Our visit to Metro Radio

smallmetro radio 008.jpg

Back in the Spring Term, Class 7 were rewarded for having the highest whole class attendance by having a studio tour of Metro Radio. This included entertainment by Martin the Magician, who performed a number of tricks, one in particular included using a live rabbit! The highlight was meeting DJ Wayne who explained how the machinery in his studio worked and the children actually recorded a windy jingle which was played that evening live on the radio. The children danced the rest of the night away to the tunes of DJ Kenny and took part in the best dancer competition. They all received a gift and a buffet was put on. The children had an unforgettable evening. The staff at Metro commented on their exceptional behaviour and manners. Well Done Class 7!

Shoebox Appeal

For the past two years, Mrs Wong has organised the shoebox appeal in school (the ‘Samaritan’s Purse’ charity.)Small shoeboxes 001.jpg
‘Operation Christmas Child’ seeks to help children abroad in difficult circumstances by providing them with a gift at Christmas time.

At Windy Nook, we encourage pupils to consider the wider global community to which they belong, The shoebox appeal gives us a perfect opportunity to put this into practice. It supports children in areas suffering under the effects of war. The idea is to send a shoebox filled with toys, toiletries and other goodies which we take for granted.

The charity provides you with a list of possible contents for your shoebox. All you have to do is decide whether you are packing a box for a boy or a girl and their age. Then, it’s time to shop! The trick is to be creative with what you put in. The final addition is a donation of £2 to cover the transport costs and then send it into school for collection by the charity.

The first time Windy Nook took part in the appeal, Key Stage Two pupils collected boxes and we managed a fantastic 100 boxes! This year, the appeal was widened to the whole school appeal. Mrs Wong hoped that we could beat last year’s target and she was amazed by the 155 boxes we collected this year!

Mrs Wong would like to pass on her thanks to the parents, children and staff who supported this appeal. The boxes were full to bursting point and were testament to the generosity of the people of Windy Nook. This looks set to be an annual event…watch this space….

For further information, log onto the Samaritan’s Purse website: www.samaritanspurse.co.uk

Did you pack a shoebox this year? Did you enjoy doing it? Let Mrs Wong know…

Playground Games Club

Year 3/4 have been learning how to play traditional games.

One of our after school clubs has given children in year 3/4 the chance to learn some traditional outdoor games.
Many of the children have perfected the art of 'jumping in' while skipping and some of the less faint hearted have tried Double Dutch.

A popular game has been the old fashioned French Skipping played with elastic bands.
Hand clapping games, and the challenge of 'Two Baller' await.

Dance Mania

The girls and boys of Windy Nook enjoyed an entertaining evening at Gateshead Leisure Centre watching the talented dancers performing their interpretations of the theme Freedom. Dance groups from both primary and secondary schools showed the amazing range of talent the borough has to offer. The support given by staff, parents and pupils made this a memorable evening all round. Miss Stokoe and Mrs. Prynn would love to see any photos or videos taken by friends and family.

Christmas Activities in Lower Key Stage Two

Although it seems ages ago now, we can still remember the great fun we had at Christmas in Year Three/Four. We had a party – lots of dancing and great food! We did lots of craft activities and even managed to fit in a spot of baking too!

Every year, the children in Key Stage Two go to St. Alban’s church for the carol service. It’s a lovely event and gets you in the mood for Christmas. Children and parents sing a mixture of traditional carols and modern Christmas songs. The orchestra play some seasonal pieces and selected children from throughout the Key Stage read extracts of the Christmas story. The readings and singing are accompanied by children carrying figures form the nativity story through the church where they make a candle lit display.

Having been to church on a cold December morning, we thought we would have a treat waiting for us when we got back…mince pies and hot orange juice! We made the pies ourselves (and gorgeous they were too!) Some of us had never tried mince pies before and really enjoyed them.

Christmas is such a lovely time to do craft activities. We made Christmas bags to put in everything we made. Christmas cards were reindeer with wobbly eyes. Best of all, we made hats to wear when eating our Christmas lunch – look at the attached photographs to see how festive we looked…

Brains on the brink!

brain.jpg
What a week!

Our Y6 pupils have done themselves proud this week.

Their brains may well be on the verge of exhaustion but WOW, what an effort they have made.

Not only have they sat SATs, but they have fitted in a number of refresher sessions, plenty of fresh air and a few even found time to make a presentaion about our developing school grounds to our Y3/4 classes!

Thanks to all involved, especially our parent helpers.
Of course the last word goes to our 'braintastic' stars of the show...
