Tree for life

apple

Part of our work to help develop good social behaviour is to reward children who are behaving well both in class, and around school.

In each Foundation Stage classroom there is a picture of a tree with apple badges. Children are rewarded with a badge if they do any of the following things;
• co-operating with others
• taking turns with toys/equipment
• being kind and thoughtful
• working with others as a team
• listening carefully
• trying hard
• tidying up
• getting dressed by themselves
• trying hard with reading or writing
• being brave
• going to the toilet alone
• putting their hand up to answer questions
• doing as they were asked

Children wear badges given through the day, and when the badge is returned to the tree, they are given a sticky label badge to keep.

We have found this system motivates young children well, and parents find out what their child has succeeded at that day!

Parents can help by continuing to praise their child for their efforts when they come home.

Healthy Choices Week

In the Autumn term, a whole school event took place to promote ‘Healthy Choices.’ The activities during this week focused on how to eat healthily, dental hygiene and the value of exercise.

In Lower Key Stage Two (Years Three and Four), we had a jam packed week! Events we took part in were:
A visit by the school dentist to talk about dental health
A visit to by the school nurse to talk about a healthy diet
Fruit tasting – mmm!
A competition to design a poster to promote fruit shop (the prize was free fruit for a week!)
A visit to Thomas Hepburn to take part in PE activities
“Ready Steady Cook where parents/carers came in and helped us to prepare food ‘against the clock’.

The week was a huge success and the children learned a great deal. Many parents were delighted with how many new things their children had tried this week.

Look out for some of the work we did in the main corridor in Key Stage Two.

Foundation Stage: Curriculum

In Foundation Stage classes follow their own curriculum.

The children work on 6 areas of learning.
- mathematical development
- creative development
- knowledge and understanding of the world
- physical development
- communication, language and literacy
- personal, social and emotional development

These are designed to provide a balanced introduction to school life and they provide opportunities for all children do well. All the children work towards achieving the Early Learning Goals at the end of their reception year.

Nursery and Reception classrooms are laid out to provide a stimulating and fun environment where children can work independently and with adults. Learning is organised into topics so children can explore themes over a number of weeks.
